Professional Grooming “ Not Just For the Poofy Dog”

When you think of professional grooming do you think of Pampered Poodles, Silky Shih~Tzus. Or Spruced up Spaniels?  If you think that professional grooming applies only to certain breeds  here’s good news for you and your pet.  Any pet can benefit from a professional grooming, even dogs with short low maintenance coats. And there are plenty of advantages for their owners as well

Health Benefits

Professional Grooming can provide an excellent form of preventative health care.   During the course of our work your pet stylist goes over every inch of your dog which helps them notice any problems that might need to be brought to the owners attention such as cracked feet, ear infections and parasites.  Since dogs do not show obvious symptoms of a problem until it has already become critical.  An inspection by an observant pet stylist is a valuable benefit.

A pet stylist does not diagnose but is able to find things that the owner might miss such as a lump or bump or the start of an ear infection.  When we see abnormal things we can then refer the owners to their veterinarian.

Regular ear inspection and cleaning can reduce the chance of an ear infection and regular nail trimming can help to avoid problems with the legs and feet.  Flea and tick control not only eliminates the discomforts associated with these pests, but helps to avoid the bacterial infections caused or transmitted by them.

Eliminates the Mess and Hassle of Doing it at Home

NO more fighting to get your dog in to the tub. No more soaked floors and walls.  No more fighting to clip nails and clean ears. Your dog has more of a tendency to give you more of a hard time then they would a pet stylist.  Don’t make the mistake of making grooming time miserable for you and

your dog.

It Makes Your Dog Feel Good

The most obvious benefit of professional grooming is reflected in the attitude of the dogs.  A professional for dogs has the same effect as a day at the salon for people.  Dogs seem to feel absolutely wonderful afterwards!  Perhaps they realize how great they look, or maybe a couple of hours of primping is a stimulating experience.  Regardless, It’s obvious that a professional grooming makes a dog feel good.  They strut when they come home, they think that they are the best looking thing on the planet.  They feel better and most dogs like the one on one attention given to them by the pet stylist.  People are more likely to hold and pet them when they are clean whereas most people have a tendency to push them away when they are dirty.  It is a natural thing for a human to be more receptive to their pet when it’s clean and the dog knows it.

So if you find your self reluctant to let  your dog on the couch or bed, or if you’ve been avoiding petting your dog because you end up with wads of hair in your hand, maybe now is the time to consider a trip to a professional pet stylist.  You and your dog will both be better for it!

How Often Should I groom My Dog

Depending on the breed of your dog the average time between grooming

Is 6-8 weeks.  This will also depend on how often you  want your dog bathed.  It is best for you, your dog and the pet stylist if your pet is groomed on a regular basis,  your pet will become accustomed to the routine of being groomed and will enjoy it instead of being afraid of it.

When Should My Puppy Have its First Professional Grooming?

Grooming on your pup should start at 12 weeks of age, to let the pup become acquainted with the sounds of the studio environment, noises such as dryers, and other dogs etc. Your groomer will teach your pup and you the proper way to brush and handle your puppy. These techniques started early will imprint on your pup. The first 6 months of life for a dog is like the first 5 years for a human. It is very important to start them early. We recommend a grooming session every month for the first 4 months. With both you and your groomer working hand in hand doing the same things at home as the groomer would in the studio the pup will take everything around him or her in stride and make it a pleasant experience and not a traumatic one, this in turn makes grooming your pet at home easy for your pup, you and the groomer
